The History of Sigma Alpha Mu

Sigma Alpha Mu was founded on the campus of City College of New York, in 1909. At 107 years old, Sigma Alpha Mu has more than 63,000 initiated members and 120 active chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada. The fraternity’s colors are Purple and White, and the official flower is the Purple Aster.

Sigma Alpha Mu’s mission statement is to “foster the development of collegiate men and our alumni by instilling strong fraternal values, offering social and service opportunities, encouraging academic excellence and teaching leadership skills. We will continue to attract members of all beliefs who appreciate our great heritage as a fraternity of Jewish men.”

Sigma Alpha Mu is also dedicated to community service, and supports philanthropies like Bounce for Beats, the American Heart Association, and the Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
