The History of Sigma Pi
Sigma Pi got its start when a group of students came to chapel hour and asked a professor of Latin and French about college fraternities. Just a month after that meeting, Sigma Pi’s four founders, Rolin Rosco James, William Raper Kennedy, George Martin Patterson, and James Thompson Kingsbury, had their first meeting. Within its first year, Sigma Pi adopted ten members, and changed its name several times. By 1904, the fraternity had begun to expand and was taking up residence at other universities. Today, the fraternity operates by the following motto, which it adopted from Robert Browning’s A Death in the Desert:
“Progress, man's distinctive mark alone,
Not God's, and not the beasts';
God is, they are.
Man partly is and wholly hopes to be.”
The fraternity operates on five foundational ideals. These are brotherhood, aristocracy of learning, heightened standards of morality and character, chivalry, and civic righteousness.
