The History of Tau Kappa Epsilon

Tau Kappa Epsilon is known for many things. For one, it became one of the first fraternities to do away with the tradition of “hell week,” which it replaced with a top-secret initiation period. It was also recognized by President Ronald Reagan, who was a former Tau Kappa Epsilon member and recognized the fraternity throughout his time as President. In 1984, Reagan invited 60 members of the fraternity to a high-profile luncheon, where Tau Kappa Epsilon awarded him the Order of the Golden Eagle and Gold Medal of the North-American Interfraternity Conference in an attempt to recognize his lifelong efforts to support Tau Kappa Epsilon and other fraternities like it.

Beyond Ronald Reagan, Tau Kappa Epsilon has graduated members including Robert Byrd, U.S. Senator from West Virginia, Roger Jepsen, U.S. Senator from Iowa, Jimmy Quillen, U.S. Representative from Tennessee, and Gerald P. Carr, NASA astronaut for Commander Skylab 4, and Steven W. Squyres, Principal investigator of the Mars Exploration Rover and Chair of NASA’s space and science advisory committee.
