The History of Theta Tau

Theta Tau was founded on the campus of the University of Minnesota on October 15, 1094. 112 years old, Theta Tau was initially called the “Society of Hammer and Tongs” by its founders, Erich J. Schrader, Elwin L. Vinal, William M. Lewis, and Isaac B. Hanks. Since its inception, Theta Tau has initiated 20,000 collegiate members and more than 30,000 lifetime members.

The fraternity’s symbol is the hammer and tongs, across the gear wheel. The motto of the fraternity is "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might;..." Notable alumni from this fraternity include Joe Engle, astronaut and commander of Space Shuttle Discovery, Curtis LeMay, US Air Force General, and Cliff Stearns, US Congressman from Florida.
