The History of Zeta Beta Tau
Zeta Beta Tau was founded on the campus of City College of New York, in New York, New York on December 29, 1898. It was the country’s first Jewish fraternity, although it has since adopted a non-discriminatory policy that allows it to open its doors to men from diverse backgrounds and faith bases.
Over the years, Zeta Beta Tau has merged with four other fraternities, including Phi Alpha, Kappa Nu, Phi Sigma Delta, and Phi Epsilon Pi. Zeta Beta Tau is an international fraternity that has historically supported philanthropies including the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which helps to raise and distribute funds for children’s hospitals throughout North America.
The fraternity is also known for its “Journey Brotherhood Program.” Unlike many other fraternities throughout the country, ZBT does not allow pledging. Instead, it offers a Brotherhood Program designed to implement a handful of significant challenges, including learning the history of the fraternity, memorizing its mission statement, mastering the skills for success in college, and developing the capabilities to succeed in life and business. New members of Zeta Beta Tau undergo the program during their first six weeks with the organization.
While Zeta Beta Tau has graduated many notable alumni, some of its most famous graduates include Leonard Bernstein, composer of West Side Story, Walter Annenberg, Former Ambassador to Great Britain, Steve Cooley, L.A. County District Attorney, Arthur Goldberg, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and Mark Steinberg, sports agent for Tiger Woods.
