The History of Sigma Chi

Sigma Chi was founded on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on June 28, 1855. The fraternity’s official colors are blue and gold, and its motto is “In This Sign You Shall Conquer.” The fraternity has 242 undergraduate chapters, 152 alumni chapters, 15,700 collegiate members, and more than 300,000 lifetime members.

Dedicated to brotherhood, service, and creating lifelong friendships, the fraternity’s constitution states that "the purpose of this fraternity shall be to cultivate and maintain the high ideals of friendship, justice, and learning upon which Sigma Chi was founded.”

Beyond its extensive membership, the fraternity also has several leadership programs, including Sigma Chi Lifeline, which provides support to people suffering from mental illness and suicidal tendencies, as well as the Sigma Chi Choices Program, which aims to combat and prevent drug and alcohol abuse among the fraternity's members. The fraternity also supports Mission 365, which is a recruitment workshop that helps people increase the quality and quantity of new members.

When it comes to philanthropy, Sigma Chi is known for supporting Derby Days, a series of charity events supported by various Sigma Chi chapters, including fundraiser and Derby Runs, all of which aim to support community efforts and events. The fraternity also elects an “International Sweetheart,” which is a female nominee who serves as the sweetheart of an undergraduate chapter for the year she is nominated.
